City of Guelph Dog Tags and Cat Registration

Did you know that in the City of Guelph, hundreds of stray dogs are impounded every year?

tagsProviding your dog with proper identification significantly increases the likelihood that your dog will get home promptly in the event that it strays or becomes lost. Not only is it one of the best gifts you could ever give your loyal companion, in the City of Guelph... it's the law.

All dogs (older than 3 months of age) residing in Guelph are to be licensed and have their licence tag affixed at all times. A fine of $75 will apply if your dog is not licensed as per City of Guelph By-law # (1991)-14008. To help make licensing easier, dog owners can purchase tags using Docupet’s online registration system. In addition to the dog tag, customers receive an online pet profile and rewards card to use at participating local businesses. Customers also receive access to a lost pet program, Learn about the Docupet partnership here.

NEW FOR 2016*

Now when you purchase your licence, it's valid until the date of purchase the following year! Don't worry, if you renew before January 1st 2016, your license will be valid for ALL OF 2016. New licences purchased will be valid until the date of purchase the following year.

Your cat can be voluntarily registered through Docupet's online tool and receive an identification tag. All proceeds from the cat registration will go to support the local shelter with initiatives such as the spay/neuter fund.

Cats can be registered online at or at the Guelph Humane Society
